  • An Artful Forest Possick, Jennifer Inquiry Animals Integrated Activities Science Projects Field Trips Grade 1 Kindergarten Science Instruction Elementary School Science Science Process Skills In this article, the authors' kindergarteners and a fellow first-grade class turned their hallway into a forest! Not just any mural, this culmination of a month-long project was based on observing, questioning, taking field trips, conducting library research (including the internet) and asking experts. The students developed skills in forming questions about what they thought they knew, wanted to know, and had learned. The author discovered that even very young learners can do science--and do it well. This article presents the month-long integrated science project which teaches primary students about animals, particularly rabbits, and science inquiry. The author learned that the curiosity of young children provides a great opportunity to do the teaching equivalent of pulling a rabbit out of a hat--introducing young scientists to the wonderful world all around them.
