| contents | A Library Media Center: Makeover Story Hill, Ann Gaughan, Stephanie School Libraries Library Facilities Educational Facilities Improvement A library media center is the information hub of the school, but it is beginning to look a little frayed at the shelves and it's time for a makeover. In this article, the authors present the steps in the makeover process and provide creative ideas to improve the atmosphere of the library media center. Before the makeover, there should be a plan. The goal of the makeover is to encourage leisure reading by creating an inviting and welcoming environment evident from the moment the students and teachers walk through the door. The plan involves all aspects of the makeover and includes the following: (1) Get the principal on board; (2) Involve students, teachers, and library media center staff; (3) Evaluate the library media center; and (4) Take before, during, and after pictures. Set a timeline for each aspect of the makeover and begin contacting suppliers. The time frame for the makeover can take from three to six months, depending on how quickly suppliers can fill the orders. |
