  • If I Only Knew Then.... Young, Terrence E., Jr. Natural Disasters Weather Emergency Programs School Libraries History teaches that a lack of disaster awareness and preparation are common threads among all major weather-related disasters. Weather hazards come in many forms: storm surge, high winds, blizzards, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, or a combination of these. It is important for both family and work colleagues to have an action plan for disasters. Knowing the vulnerability and what actions should be taken can reduce the negative effects of a disaster. The author shares lessons learned, and helpful suggestions for an emergency preparedness plan such as making sure important documents are stored in watertight containers, having an e mail address for emergency use even if you do not own a computer, and having several copies of the library media file backup saved on portable media, and given to key school personnel to take off site.
