  • Prevent a Disaster in Your Library: Advertise Geier, Denise B. School Libraries Library Administration Publicity Public Relations Library Services Good school libraries influence student achievement and there are studies from 15 states to prove it. Several reports provide evidence that access to a good school library has positive correlation to reading scores. Higher test scores have also been linked to the presence of quality libraries in schools. Professional librarians are an essential part of a quality library. Yet, even with this research supporting programs, school media specialists are often easy targets for budget cuts. This article presents ways in which library media specialists can demonstrate their contributions and help insure their jobs. Suggestions include: (1) Taking the lead in establishing the library as a place that no one in the school could possibly think of being without; (2) Media specialists must find creative ways to publicize what they do using such things as newsletters, displays, and bulletin boards; (3) Programs that showcase reading or encourage reading for pleasure bring attention to the library and the goals of the media specialist; (4) Reporting to administrators and letting the principal know what is going on in the library; (5) Going the extra mile in making sure teachers see media specialists as a resource; (6) Making the library the hub of the school by keeping new things happening; and (7) Making connections, by getting involved in professional organizations.
