  • Free Our Friends in Learning Stidham, Sue School Libraries Educational Environment Library Facilities Manipulative Materials Library Services Young Children Many secrets can be told by the physical surroundings of library media centers. Whether the center is kid-friendly is one of the first obvious tell-tale signs. When a library center has Arthur & D.W., Clifford, Pooh & Eeyore, shells, special rocks, etc. hidden by the circulation center or in the back in boxes, it's time to revolt. The movie Free Willie (Warner Bros., 1993) warmed the hearts of young children and adults alike. Now, it is time to free the rest of some other friends in learning. All friends of children should be freed so that each can share the moment of truth as these characters jump to life and teach those oh so important lessons like sharing, caring, and friendship. Just as cuddly character friends can bring a story to life, so too can something as simple as a rock in the hand of a young child who then discovers the difference between lead and zinc.
