In the course of the authors work of training teachers or providing training for implementation of materials, they have found that the resources of the school library media center are invaluable for helping ELLs acquire English as their second language and master academic standards. The reason for this is that even when these students are conversationally fluent, they often have difficulty mastering the formal, academic English needed for writing assignments and tests or the specialized vocabulary used in content areas such as math, science, or social studies. Students need to know these formal terms and subject-specific vocabulary in order to comprehend their lessons. Therefore, word recognition and the ability to decode fluently are the keys to enabling ELLs to effectively process and construct meaning from class texts, learn new concepts, and master local and state requirements. In this article, the authors highlight several ways in modifying vocabulary resources to help ELL teachers and their students.
