Author and poet visits are very important for children of all ages. Young children learn much from meeting real people who write professionally. Good speakers inspire students to write and communicate in an articulate manner while in school and later in life as adults. It offers them the option of becoming professional writers themselves. Young people are stimulated to read more when they have met an author or poet face-to-face. In many schools, however, the challenge is to find funding for these visits. One method is to sell books written by the visiting author, and then use the profits to fund the presentation. Another popular fund raiser is school-wide book fairs, where the proceeds can be used for author visits. |
