  • Teachers and Librarians Collaborate! Teaching about Hispanic Culture Codispoti, Margit Hickey, M. Gail Cooperation Media Specialists Librarians Hispanic American Culture Childrens Literature Social Studies Teacher Collaboration Cooperative Planning Cultural Awareness Integrated Activities Elementary School Teachers Social studies instruction benefits from collaboration between classroom teachers and library media specialists who together can identify the best trade books to meet the goals of the social studies curriculum. Many lists of effective collaboration strategies have been published, but there are few descriptive examples of successful teacher-librarian collaboration in the educational literature. In this article, the authors discuss how librarians and teachers can effectively integrate social studies and children's literature by identifying relevant social studies concepts and instructional objectives. They show how collaboration can result in the development of instructional resources that benefit classroom teachers and their students. They hope their example of a collaborative effort between teacher and librarian will facilitate effective collaborative efforts that support social studies instruction. Collaborations linking social studies curriculum themes or concepts and quality children's literature collections can go a long way toward promoting effective social studies instruction at the K-6 level. Teachers are encouraged to seek out librarians or children's literature specialists within the school or community to assist them with collaborative planning. (Contains 23 notes and a list of 7 resources.)
