- Fac-Back-OPAC: An Open Source Interface to Your Library System Beccaria, Mike Scott, Dan Figurative Language Library Networks Academic Libraries Library Automation Information Technology College Libraries Access to Information The new Fac-Back-OPAC (a faceted backup OPAC) is built on code that was originally developed by Casey Durfee in February 2007. It represents the convergence of two prominent trends in library tools: the decoupling of discovery tools from the traditional integrated library system (ILS) and the use of readily available open source components to rapidly produce leading-edge technology for meeting patron and library needs. In this article, the authors trace the history of Fac-Back-OPAC and explain how they got involved in the system. Using a car as a metaphor, the authors take a look at some of the features that Fac-Back-OPAC offers, starting under the hood to examine some functionality that the patron may be looking for and ending with the patron's experience of taking the OPAC for a test drive.
