  • The Forum on AIDS: An Exercise in Research and Statesmanship Goldfinch, Ellen Science Activities Boarding Schools Sexually Transmitted Diseases Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Research Foreign Countries Developing Nations Health Promotion The AIDS pandemic has become an important force that is shaping the world and will certainly have an enormous impact on the lives of young people today. Forty million people around the world are suffering from HIV/AIDS and, every year, eight million people die of this disease. As both school librarian and teacher of the Challenge and Change course at Bishop's College School, a Canadian boarding school with a diverse student body, the author felt it crucial to give students the opportunity to discover through research how deeply the AIDS pandemic is devastating lives--particularly in developing countries--and how it is preventing development and improvement of lives around the world. This article discusses how the author created a simulated forum where students role-play the parts of representatives of various countries and non-governmental organizations. The Forum on AIDS becomes an exciting exercise for many students in which they behave like statesmen and stateswomen and take ownership of a problem that will affect them and their children.
