  • Creating Standards and Frameworks for Information Literacy Barnett, Cassandra National Standards State Standards Information Literacy Standard Setting School Libraries In this article, the author discusses her experiences on the committee charged with writing the first ever Arkansas State Frameworks for Information Literacy. She compares her work on the Arkansan frameworks with her work on the committee that wrote the new American Association of School Librarians (AASL) "National Standards for the 21st-Century Learner" and offers tips for those on other state committees: (1) Pay attention to relevant national standards; (2) Read the professional literature; (3) Talk to colleagues who are not directly involved in writing state frameworks; (4) Get outside the box; (5) Before starting the process, make some decisions about the the goals and process of framework-building; (6) After the frameworks are written, plan for implementation; and (7) Remember that the focus should be on student learning.
