contents The Big Read: Middle School Style Findlay, Christine School Libraries Media Specialists Middle Schools Middle School Students Gender Differences Males Early Adolescents Reading Motivation Student Motivation Community Programs In this article, the author relates how she helped organize the Middle School Community Read project, a community reading project for middle school students in her school district. The project aimed to reverse the trend of a community experiencing loss of male readers as they become teens. First, the author and her group formed a small committee with a teacher and three middle school library media specialists. For their reading project, they also invited local celebrities to read chapters from the book "Touching Spirit Bear" by Ben Mikaelsen to model the idea that reading is fun. They also planned four evening events such as Rock Climbing, Survival 101, Walking the Native Path, and Backpacking for students and their parents.
