A former grade-school teacher, Scieszka is also the creator of Guys Read (www.guysread.com), a literacy program that wants boys to know that reading can be just as absorbing as waving a Wii controller. With his good-natured wit and knack for knowing what kids need, Scieszka was chosen as children's book ambassador for raising national awareness of the importance of children's books. In an interview, Scieszka describes his reaction when he was asked to be the nation's first children's book laureate and shares his platform on his new position.
