  • One Indivisible Day: Teaching for Social Justice through Literature Bush, Gail Childrens Literature Social Justice Teaching Methods Adolescent Literature Democratic Values Global Approach School Libraries A day-long symposium in June 2007 by the Center for Teaching through Children's Books and the National College of Education Office of Partnerships at National-Louis University (NLU) convened for the purpose of immersing the professional community in the goal of teaching for social justice through literature for children and adolescents. The symposium was entitled INDIVISIBLE and was based on the phenomenal challenge that all educators share to create one nation with liberty and justice for all. Registrants were invited to prepare for their participation by reading recommended resources, examining personal beliefs and professional practices, and thinking about teaching, social justice, children's literature, and, most of all, their students as both local and global citizens. Participants were encouraged to prepare themselves for both provocation and transformation. This article presents several examples of presentations given at this workshop and also provides references for keywords related to social justice in instruction.
