  • Life as a Library Media Specialist within a Juvenile Detention School Parker, Meredith Nontraditional Education Correctional Institutions Juvenile Justice School Libraries Librarians Library Services Reading Motivation Reading Programs Norfolk Detention School is an alternative school for juveniles under the age of 18 who are awaiting adjudication by the court and those who are awaiting transfer to another facility. This article describes the author's experience as a library media specialist in this juvenile detention school. She describes how she has promoted and encouraged reading among a student population that, for the most part, is not made up of avid readers. She believes that each child, regardless of his background, deserves the same education that other children in "normal" schools receive.
