Villano, Matt Internet Web Sites Computer Security Computer Uses in Education School Safety Computer Software Child Safety The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requires any school or library receiving funding from the federal E-Rate program to deploy web filtering technology to prevent users from viewing objectionable material while they are using the institution's computers. However, opponents of web filtering legislation question whether or not mandated Internet filters are the best way to achieve those safeguards due to the ease with which patrons may have such software disabled, and whether the filters are not up to the task and obstructing use of certain Web 2.0 tools, may be interfering with the educational mission. This article presents the arguments raised by educators who are against web filtering. It also advocates for educating children about online safety rather than policing Internet use.
