Kroski, Ellyssa Internet Computer Mediated Communication Librarians Library Services Libraries Access to Information The author describes how she was able to broadcast her whereabouts, her moods, and her desire to connect with friends for dinner to over 150 conference attendees simultaneously, using her mobile phone through a service called Twitter. Twitter enables social butterflies like the author to instantly publish brief messages to a network of contacts. By far the leading service within the burgeoning trend of microblogging, Twitter, launched in 2006, presents a new way to communicate online, opening up new opportunities for users to foster community, test new ideas, share resources, keep updated, and just socialize. In this article, the author describes how librarians can find opportunities to interact with their patrons on Twitter. She also offers tips on the basics of Twitter. (Contains 30 online resources.)
