The award-giving body was established in 2004 by the Association of Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to honor the most distinguished contribution to the body of American children's literature known as beginning reader books. Geisel created the category of beginning reader books with "The Cat in the Hat," published in 1957. After the success of "The Cat in the Hat," Theodor Seuss Geisel and Random House established the Beginner Books series. Created by Dr. Seuss and other authors, these books used simple language, repetition, rhyme and rhythm, along with lively illustrations to tell their stories. The task of the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award committee is to explore the wide range of books published for children from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 2 over the course of the year of the award, for distinguished books that offer child appeal, while supporting the beginning reader in the tradition of Geisel's work. |
