  • Casting a 'Net Valet, Will Business Labor Force Development Community Colleges Higher Education Web Based Instruction Electronic Learning Internet Virtual Universities Professional Training Enrollment Computer Assisted Instruction Employment Potential The budget squeeze is battering both community colleges and their workforce development clients. But a unique network is helping those community colleges reel in clients through computer- and Web-based learning. In this article, the author describes the ACT Center network of Calhoun Community College in Decatur, Georgia. ACT Centers are designed to make workforce development services flexible and affordable for clients: flexible because the majority of courses can be reached--via the Internet--anytime and anywhere; affordable because businesses are able to pick and choose the courses they offer to employees, rather than buy an entire library of courses. The pay-as-you-go method has proven particularly popular with smaller-sized businesses that may not have large training budgets. Offering courses at community colleges is also part of the appeal for businesses. Having support services, people who can answer feedback, and the ability to track employee progress raise confidence in the system.
