contents Evaluation Criteria for the Places of Learning Callison, Daniel Evaluation Criteria School Libraries Learning Laboratories Media Specialists Library Services Principals Learning Resources Centers Scoring Rubrics Elementary Schools Educational Environment Inquiry In this article, the author talks about the concept of school library as a place of learning for students. He contends that a school library must be conceived in terms of three aspects. First, it should have a creative school library media specialist to lead the principal through a meaningful vision of what the library could be in terms of collection, program, and other functions of the facility. Second, it must be imagined as a force to vitalize learning across the many classrooms adjacent to the facility. Third, it should be thought in twenty-first century terms as a central control and clearinghouse for learning not only across the school, but across the community. Here, the author considers the future school library media center, in which many of them are emerging already with wireless capabilities and growing multimedia production spaces. Then he discusses the school library as a modern information inquiry learning laboratory and describes some tangible aspects of the laboratory. Finally, the author considers new criteria for evaluation of the places or facilities that should be created for inquiry, exploration, conversation, and discovery. A rubric for the places for inquiry, exploration, conversation, and discovery is presented. (Contains 1 table.)
