A Cumulative Tale Brown, Judy Computer Uses in Education School Libraries Study Centers Enrollment Trends Enrollment Educational Technology Librarians Books Library Facilities Computer Centers Elementary Secondary Education At one time, the Caldwell High School Library at Caldwell Exempted Village Schools in Caldwell, Ohio, had two sections--the main room with the shelves, circulation desk, and tables and chairs, and an adjoining room with student desks. There was a wide opening to the back room, and glass partitions in the upper half of the wall separating the two rooms. This allowed the librarian and the study hall teacher to monitor a large number of students in both areas. As student enrollment increased in the late 1980s, classroom space was at a premium, so the opening was replaced with a wall to create a separate classroom. When the school district received state funding for technology in the mid-90s, the classroom became a computer lab. However, use of the facility was limited to full classes because there was no one to supervise individual lab use. That changed in 2003, when the administration decided that the opening between the lab and the library should be reopened, with some modifications. In lieu of the previous wide archway, a door was installed, which permitted the lab and library the option of functioning as a single entity when the door was open, or as two independent learning centers when the door was closed. In this article, the author describes how the doorway that was uncovered in the Caldwell High School Library and its reopening served as a catalyst for small, but very effective, changes at both the high school and the elementary buildings.
