contents One Library Media Specialist's Journey to Understanding Advocacy: A Tale of Transformation Levitov, Deborah School Libraries Media Specialists Advocacy Library Services Institutional Cooperation Libraries Information Literacy In this article, the author traces her journey from fulfilling her evolving job duties to an increased sense of awareness that advocacy was an integral part of her work. The author started her career by doing the best she could do for the library media program she managed, and evolved to become an advocate for school libraries in general. Through this process, she developed a concrete philosophy about advocacy, organized around these distinguishing traits of effective advocates: (1) professional learner; (2) teacher; (3) leader; (4) visionary; and (5) connector. The author claims she has learned a great deal since stepping into her first school media center. For her, the journey is not over, but the understanding of advocacy is much clearer.
