  • The Making of an Advocate: My Life in the Arena Schuckett, Sandy School Libraries Media Specialists Advocacy Library Services Librarian Teacher Cooperation Elementary Schools Library Associations Professional Associations Organizations (Groups) In this article, the author shares how she became an advocate for school libraries. Moving into a career as a school library media specialist after five-and-a-half years as a teacher, she eventually became a delegate to the first White House Conference on Library and Information Services. At these conferences, she learned where and how decisions were made on local, state, and national levels; and came to realize that many of these decision-makers had minimal knowledge of how all types of libraries and library programs worked. This realization led to her decision to become an advocate for school libraries. The author believes that becoming a school library advocate requires communication, collaboration, creativity, connection, confidence, persistence, and passion.
