  • Journey into the World of Manga and Graphic Novels Simmons, Mary O'Briant, Beth Library Materials School Libraries Library Services Novels Males Layout (Publications) Picture Books Cartoons Learning Resources Centers Libraries Surveys Books In this article, the authors present the outcomes of a project they implemented to increase library use by their adolescent males, a population at their school that avoided the library like the plague. They conducted a survey to know what their male students wished they would find in their media center. Their students suggested manga as a genre, and they also provided the authors with specific titles to purchase. Armed with these suggestions, the authors decided to head to their nearest Barnes & Noble to purchase the first set of manga and graphic novels. Now, their library's manga and graphic novel collection has grown to more than 1,200 titles. Surveying their student body was powerful and has really driven the authors' library collection development.
