contents The Friends of Northside ISD Libraries Sets Sail Hultgren, Joyce School Libraries Organizations (Groups) Advocacy School Districts Committees The Director of Library and Textbook services for the Northside Independent School District (NISD) Jana Knezek, had long wanted to create a Friends group and she realized how beneficial it would be to have an organization in place that could serve as an advocate for school library issues. Jana temporarily put aside that desire and participated in a statewide effort of school librarians that lobbied the Texas Education Agency Commissioner to recognize that school libraries are indeed instructional. This effort was successful. Encouraged by this, Jana approached other NISD professionals, hauled up the anchor of inertia, and organized Friends of NISD Libraries to address future advocacy concerns. With Jana as the pilot, the early organizers met on a regular basis and charted the mission and goals of Friends. This article looks back over the squalls the Friends of NISD Libraries has navigated and the ports it has reached.
