It is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner." For every commercially available product, there are open source alternatives developed by enterprising individuals. What's the draw? Commercial products are limited by the research and development that one company can provide. Open source solutions, on the other hand, have devoted communities of users who provide improvements and solutions to problems with programs. The variety of tools available may be surprising.
