  • Teaching and Measuring Dispositions: A View from the Middle Chessin, Paula Romanowski, Ellen Media Specialists School Libraries Librarians Behavior Patterns Measures (Individuals) Attitudes Values Beliefs Action Research Middle School Students Research Skills The authors' professional standards used to be pretty straightforward and specific. Not exactly works of literary creativity, but they served the purpose of giving them structure and direction, and let their principals know what they actually did all day. Then came along a new buzzword called "dispositions." They heard it for the first time when discussing the new AASL "Standards for the 21st-Century Learner." It became clear to the authors that these new standards required a bit more responsibility, thoughtfulness, and reflection on the part of the library media specialist, which is a positive thing in any profession. It reminded them of how overwhelmed they felt when their department supervisor announced that they were going to undertake an Action Research project in their schools. After further reading and reflection, they realized that this type of activity ultimately would make them better at what they do. Embedding dispositions into their professional standards make the document meaningful to library media specialists, classroom teachers, administrators, and most importantly, students. It allows all of them to take joint ownership of skills which should be entrenched in the classroom, the library, and beyond.
