This law requires schools receiving federal E-rate discounts on Internet services to educate their students on appropriate online behavior. Many states including Virginia have mandated Internet Safety education in all grade levels as part of technology education. There are many free resources now available for designing an Internet Safety curriculum. According to the Web site "iKeepSafe.org" at www.ikeepsafe.org, the Internet Keep Safe Coalition identified three rules of Internet Safety for elementary students: (1) Keep safe personal information; (2) Keep away from Internet strangers; and (3) Keep telling adults about everything they see on the Internet. These three rules are taught through the character Faux Paw the Techno Cat. The site offers books and movies staring Faux Paw teaching these rules. Another great resource is "CyberSmart! 21st Century Skills for Education" at http://cybersmartcurriculum.org. They also offer free lesson plans by grade level for implementing Internet Safety education into a 21st century skills curriculum. In this article, the author describes Internet Safety lessons she had with elementary students in her school. |
