One of her first tasks as the interim media specialist was to help organize the fourth grade science fair. Using her recently acquired library school skills, she decided to call the local public library and alert the Children's Room about the upcoming project. The reaction of the Children's Room was not what she had expected. The librarian on the other end of the line was shocked, appreciative, and grateful. Apparently in the past, the local public library was rarely informed when there was a big school project, and subsequently they were always overwhelmed when students came into the library clamoring for information. The author, on the other hand, was just as shocked that this school district lacked a collaborative relationship with its local public library. Now at her current job, she is in a school district with a tight group of librarians that work closely together and firmly believe in collaborating with the local public library. In this article, the author offers some easy ideas that have been used in her school district to successfully implement collaboration with the public library.
