- Invoking Digital Reference: Creation and Implementation Johnson, Wendell Burke, Adam Information Needs Reference Services Library Services Synchronous Communication Library Automation Library Development Institutional Evaluation Formative Evaluation In response to the changing educational landscape of the community college, reference librarians must adapt their service to fit the information needs of their patrons. One such update is synchronous digital reference, which applies instant messaging technology to library service. Todd Library at Waubonsee Community College (Sugar Grove, Illinois) introduced this type of reference service in order to fulfill certain goals as outlined in its mission statement and to satisfy the accreditation requirements of AQIP. Although the technological challenge has been met, follow-up will be necessary to gauge the overall effectiveness of this service.
