In Australia, both the Victorian Government and the Catholic education authorities have changed their notion of schooling. The most significant change has been the linking of curriculum, pedagogy and the types of spaces in which children learn. Another major change has been flexibility in how the total allowable square meters set down by these authorities can be used. This has led to designing for specific types of learning rather than providing the traditional classroom for students of a particular age group. The new Prep--year 6 Catholic Primary School at Wyndham Vale, Our Lady of the Southern Cross, has been planned for long term enrolment of 450 students with 150 students in each of three "learning communities". More specifically, it has been designed for a wide range of activities and incorporates current thinking in curriculum, pedagogy and space to create a state-of-the-art learning environment. Why is this school so different? This article describes what the new pedagogy entails and then looks at the type of design needed to support this.
