The manuscript provides perspective on the knowledge base in the growing area of podcasting in libraries and academia. A walkthrough of the podcast creation and distribution process using basic computing skills and open source tools is narrated. Challenges to the process and guidelines for increased chances of success are presented using an example framework of a do-it-yourself podcast pilot created for an academic library course. Finally, some implications are discussed for podcast systems as a distance learning aid in support of the Guidelines for Distance Learning Library Services. (Contains 28 notes.)
