In fact, according to a recent survey, 96% of Americans said they had visited a library in person, but less than one-third have visited their online library. Since everyone agrees that online library resources are valuable, why this disconnect? One way libraries can bridge the gap is through better marketing of electronic resources and of the library website itself. In this article, the author discusses web marketing techniques to promote online resources. These include: (1) leveraging the online catalog; (2) optimizing the website for search engines; (3) creating landing pages for promotional materials; (4) advertising on the web; and (5) advertising on social networking sites. The author also suggests methods to evaluate marketing efforts so that one can choose which techniques to continue, change, or cease. (Contains 4 figures.)
