Using "Moodle[TM]": How Rural School Librarians Stay Connected

What if one is the only school librarian for multiple districts, and one just cannot justify the time to travel to a regular, traditional class meeting These are questions that school librarians in Iowa, as well as elsewhere, have asked time and again. Four school librarians in Iowa, however, found a solution. Through the course of the last several months, a group of nearly sixty Iowa school librarians have explored one answer to these questions through a state-wide course entitled "Developing Your School Library Curriculum for the 21st Century." The class was a combination of face-to-face experiences, distance learning via a statewide fiber optic network, all held together by the structure offered by "Moodle[TM]," a Web-based, open source class management application. While there can be a considerable amount of discussion focusing on the technical aspects of using "Moodle[TM]," the focus of this article is on the practical application for distance learning.
