contents Learning to Lead.... Coatney, Sharon School Libraries Library Services Media Specialists Library Role Institutional Mission Librarian Attitudes Alignment (Education) Goal Orientation Change Strategies Library Development In this article, the author discusses the most important thing she thinks school libraries should work toward. It is important for a school librarian to know and understand the mission of the school. It is also important to formulate a mission for the school library program. School librarians must think about and reflect on their own beliefs. What is the bottom line? Is the school mission something that the school librarian can support? Does it align with the philosophy of the school librarian? Being accepted as a leader in a school is not an automatic outcome of accepting a position. Knowing, defining, and, more importantly, agreeing with the underlying beliefs and mission of the school is the first step to leadership for the school librarian.
