- Advocacy through Relationships Howard, Jody K. School Libraries Librarians Advocacy Librarian Teacher Cooperation Today, school librarians must be advocates for their students, administrators, staff, and instructional program. This important responsibility, if neglected, can result in the library program being cut severely or eliminated completely. One way to begin building advocacy is through developing strong relationships with members of the learning community. School librarians must understand that they need to project a positive image of openness, warmth, dedication, and flexibility to the members of the learning community. They must then continue to engage in frequent and continual interactions with members of that community. By developing strong relationships in this way, school librarians are acting as advocates for their programs while also establishing other advocates to believe in and support the school library. In this way they are "growing" advocates... people who will speak up for and about the school library.
