contents Something New...Planning for Your New School Library Jones, Leigh Ann School Libraries Educational Facilities Planning Library Administration Opening a new school library is a bit like planning a wedding. It is an expensive process, with months of planning required. Every decision impacts how smoothly the big event will go. A bride has colors and fabric swatches to examine, selections to make, and countless vendors to consider. Librarians may peruse paint chips, choose shelving and furniture, select thousands of books and other materials, and weigh the merits of a myriad of jobbers. In the same way that a wedding coordinator can lend experience and offer advice to a bride, a full-time library coordinator can facilitate the process of opening a new school library. If a coordinator isn't in the picture for a district, careful advance planning and attention to detail will allow it to prepare for a library that will serve its students and staff well. Glossy bridal magazines have a planning calendar with monthly benchmarks. The bride is advised to book the wedding venue one year in advance while the groom should be fitted for his tux three months prior to the wedding. Applying this type of calendar to the opening of a school library may help librarians in planning as well. Planning for new school libraries is a yearly process in Frisco (Texas) Independent School District (ISD). While the process in Frisco ISD may differ from one's own situation, a monthly benchmark calendar may be useful in shaping his own new school library. This article presents an example of a benchmark calendar for a school library.
