The survey covered a 20-year period from 1982 to 2002 and documented a dramatic decline in the reading of literary works by all age groups during that period. The steepest decline of 28 percent was found among the youngest age group of 18- to 24-year-olds. In this article, the author describes a pilot project that engages young students in the love of reading by using the arts as an integral part of the process. In the pilot project, first-grade students, entering second grade, were invited to write and illustrate stories. These stories were then preserved in clear plastic sleeves in a three-ring binder with a full-view cover for artwork, to be housed in the school library as part of an ongoing art and literacy project.
