Online Courses Online Systems Library Automation Library Development Library Services Technology Planning Computer Software Reviews Academic Libraries To date, over one-fifth of all U.S. higher education students are now taking at least one online course. The Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) recently surveyed more than 2,500 colleges and universities to reveal that over 3.9 million students were taking at least one online course during the 2007 fall term. This number is a 12% increase from fall 2006. Of these colleges and universities that offered programs in psychology and the social sciences, approximately 30% of the programs were fully online. These staggering numbers might explain why librarians have recently been feeling a second big push to have a more active online presence in order to connect with and serve their online patrons. The author says "second big push" because he believes that the first major effort came several years ago when university libraries required librarians to reexamine their paper subject guides and convert them into an online format. This article describes LibGuides and Jing, two examples of the technology being adopted by librarians in order to connect with patrons, especially those unable or unwilling to visit the physical library.
