  • Educating School Administrators Levitov, Deborah School Libraries Library Services Librarians Administrators Principals Library Role Standards Guides Interpersonal Communication Collegiality Administrators are identified as key players in the success of school library programs and in the success of school librarians. Yet research has shown that administrators continue to have little understanding of what the school library program is, can be, or should be in the school setting, nor are administrators familiar with the roles a school librarian can play in the school academic program. The school librarian is often the only one that keeps the school administrator informed about the library, the role of the librarian, standards for learning and programs, and the place for the library program in the academic plan. The school librarian should not underestimate the importance of communicating with and educating school administrators on an ongoing basis. AASL's "Standards for the 21st-Century Learner" (2007) and its new "Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs" (2009) give every school librarian reason to make a plan for bringing school administrators up-to-date on these new standards.
