District after district made financially based decisions to minimize, and in a few cases totally eliminate, school library programs. Across the state, many of Ohio's children lost precious learning opportunities. As soon as the 2002 Operating Standards were announced, the Ohio Educational Library Media Association (OELMA) began advocating on behalf of Ohio's school children to preserve and restore school library services and learning opportunities for Ohio's school children. OELMA's advocacy efforts supported the work of Leadership for School Libraries or L4SL and persisted long after L4SL dissolved. During the nearly 10 years that followed, OELMA has worked to preserve and restore school library services for Ohio's students, and new strategies have evolved.
