  • Many Libraries Have Gone to Federated Searching to Win Users Back from Google. Is It Working? King, Douglas Internet Web Sites Computer Software Synthesis Databases Metadata Libraries Access to Information Library Science Search Strategies Student Research Assignments Information Retrieval Information Technology College Students Expectation Efficiency Difficulty Level Theory Practice Relationship In the last issue, this journal asked a question on many librarians' minds, and it was pleased with the depth and variety of responses. As suggested by this journal editorial board member Oliver Pesch, readers were asked, "Many libraries have gone to federated searching to win users back from Google. Is it working?" Respondents approached the question from a variety of vantage points and, not surprisingly, espoused wildly disparate opinions on the theoretical and functional success of current federated search tools, techniques, and products. Some respondents mentioned specific local projects, while others approached the topic from a theoretical perspective. This article takes a look at what the six practitioners and one library science professor had to say on the topic of how and why libraries are providing federated search capabilities in a Googlized world.
