contents North Dakota's Centennial Quilt and Problem Solvers: Solutions: The Library Problem Small, Marian Elementary School Students Reading Motivation Probability Problem Solving Readability Reading Grade 4 Grade 1 Libraries Quilt investigations, such as the Barn quilt problem in the December 2008/January 2009 issue of "Teaching Children Mathematics" and its solutions in last month's issue, can spark interdisciplinary pursuits for teachers and exciting connections for the full range of elementary school students. This month, North Dakota's centennial quilt problem blends the mathematical strands of measurement, data and probability, geometry, and number. Student's activity sheet of North Dakota's centennial quilt is presented. Solving the problem from the March 2009 issue gives students a context for studying and in a meaningful way. This article also describes a library problem that involves choosing a library book, counting the words on a page, and then statistically analyzing the results to measure how difficult that book might be to read. (Contains 3 figures, 1 resource and 2 online resources.)
