contents Environment Matters Harvey, Carl A., II School Libraries Environmental Influences Educational Environment Library Services Librarians Barriers Library Materials Electronic Libraries Environment isn't just the space itself; it also includes the feelings and vibes--the atmosphere. As with all environments there are elements that can't be controlled. So, the focus needs to be on what can be changed and modified to make the environment better. The environment in the school library can be compared to others in the real world. Not all environments are the same. Elementary students probably won't grow and thrive in a high school library and vice versa. The environment of the school library needs to be flexible and quick to adapt. Students need to perceive the library as a place to read, to relax, to research, to explore, and to create. The author stresses that it is important for school librarians to be aware of their patrons so that they can alter and adjust the environment to meet specific needs. This article discusses some perceived threats in a school library that must be eliminated for learning to take place.
