  • The Changing Role of Reference Services in Academic Health Sciences Libraries Mitchell, Nicole Medical Libraries Reference Services Library Services Librarians User Needs (Information) Users (Information) Library Role Resources Library Materials Electronic Publishing For the past several years, many in the library profession have questioned the relevance of reference librarians in the digital age. With so much information available online, are reference librarians even still needed? The author believes they are--probably even more so today than ever. It is precisely the vast proliferation of electronic resources that require the knowledge and skills of reference librarians. The author mentions that educators must come to understand that the roles reference librarians have traditionally filled are changing. In this article, Mitchell discusses the need for librarians to move beyond the walls of library and incorporate themselves into users' everyday lives. She stresses that in this ever-changing and increasingly technological environment, librarians have to stay informed about what users both want and need.
