There aren't many roads in Ghana. No matter where one lives, he/she needs to get along with others. These are a few of the observations third grade students made during a collaborative unit that was aimed at increasing reading comprehension. Some of what these third graders learned was on the list of AASL standards the author had created for each lesson plan; much of the significant learning was not on the list. At many points during the five-lesson collaboration, the author was confronted with the choice of sticking with the plan, or going with the learning that was naturally evolving, which often corresponded with AASL standards she had failed to consider. This article describes the collaboration with a third grade teacher, and discusses the changeable and exciting journey of learning from planning to execution to assessment.
