Using their knowledge of students, school librarians provide reader's advisory, matching books to individuals based on their interests, aptitudes, and abilities. They know that reading skills are an integral part of academic achievement and work to accelerate this important component in learning. Their challenge is to instill an appreciation of stories, themes, and ideas that can be found in novels, and to enhance understanding and comprehension of nonfiction. A picture may be worth a thousand words and the explosion of graphical, hyperlinked websites has increased literacy as the written word is accompanied by interpretive color and images. With this in mind, the author wants to promote reading with visuals that would be created by students and exhibit examples of the types of books that appeal to them. Creating bookmarks to market the library helps foster reading, builds school pride, and sparks interest in media center programs. The author discusses how she visualized and implemented a student-designed bookmark project for her library.
