Libraries Internet Librarians Computer Mediated Communication Telecommunications Handheld Devices Photography Social Networks When product pipeline first covered Twitter back in July 2007, the tool was so novel that only a very few libraries and librarians were experimenting with it. Now, over two years later, Twitter has gone mainstream, thanks to promotion by high-profile stars. From its early beginnings as a microblogging application, Twitter morphed into a communications platform, a customer service portal, an answer engine, and a marketing haven. Though the basic functionality of Twitter hasn't changed much over the past few years, the powerful Twitter application programming interfaces (APIs) have meant the creation of hundreds of new and innovative tools designed to integrate with and improve one's Twitter experience. In this article, the authors look at a few of these applications and how libraries and librarians can use them.
