There are many options--both traditional and nontraditional--for learning about some of the latest thinking in the profession. In this article, the authors have chosen several available formats and listed some of the free and not-so free top resources in each category (journals, books, web sites, social media connections, district and state web sites, and blogs). No matter what kind of professional situation school librarians are in, there are choices and options that should work. In this economic climate, funds for journals, conferences, professional membership are at a premium. To maximize the resources purchased, school librarians can consider banding together with colleagues to spread the wealth. Whether in face-to-face sessions or online communities, these summer groups could share ideas from articles such as this one, pass along new strategies learned at conferences, or maybe even just experience using some of the social networking technologies for the first time as a group. As summer groups are formed, colleagues that may not have access to professional development or resources should be invited. This opportunity may lead them to just the right resources they need to improve their programs. |
