Lately it seems that people are less interested in connecting with information than they are with connecting to one another, which begs the question, "Is Facebook the new Google?" Given this trending away from solitary toward collaborative and communicative tools, it is perhaps not surprising that nearly all of the major Google products launched last year were related to interpersonal communication. But one of these myriad tools, a new telecommunications service called Google Voice, may be of particular interest to cash-strapped libraries wishing to extend their expertise and services to a population interested in real-time, mobile, interpersonal communication. This article discusses how the simple implementation of Google Voice, its elegant interface, and its myriad features can be a potential powerful communications tool for libraries wishing to provide or extend their services.
